Internships do more harm than good What is an internship? An internship is a work-related learning experience for individuals who wish to develop hands on work experience in a certain occupational field. Most internships are temporary assignments that last approximately three months or up to a year. After reading the essayâ€Å" Take This Internship and Shove it â€Å" by Kamenetz Anya who graduated from Yale University, I agree with her that internships do more harm than good because of the opportunity cost, over- identify and impact on the economy, not teach the intern the skill they need for the future professional life. Unpaid internships will cause an opportunity cost. The opportunity cost of work as an internship is you for go the income that you suppose to make by working at another job to pay for your rent or pay for your student loan. In the essay Kamenetz mention that interns risk opportunity cost. Time spent at an unpaid internship means that students are not earning money to support themselves or pay of f their student loans. Some internships even cost money, so students may incur further debt (585). You will also be losing benefits such as vacation, wages, and health benefits. Some internships require you to work full time. Instead of staying at home and taking care of your child, you have to go work for others for free.
