Review of The Drunkard’s Walk †How Randomness Rules Our Lives by Mlodinow Essay

Peruse the book â€Å"The Drunkard’s Walk †How Randomness Rules Our Lives† by Mlodinow and pay uncommon take care of the accompanying inquiries. A portion of these inquiries may show up on tests and tests. Part 1 Peering through the Eyepiece of Randomness 1. Clarify the marvel â€Å"regression toward the mean.† In any arrangement of arbitrary occasions an uncommon occasion is well on the way to be followed, due absolutely to risk, by an increasingly normal one. 2. What variables decide if an individual will be fruitful in profession, venture, and so on.? Accomplishment in our professions, in our ventures, and in our life choices, both major and minorâ€is as much the aftereffect of arbitrary factors as the consequence of aptitude, readiness, and difficult work. 3. Was Paramount’s terminating of Lansing the right choice? After she was terminated, Paramount movies piece of the overall industry bounced back. No, Lansing was terminated due to industry’s misconception of irregularity and not in light of her own imperfect dynamic. Lansing had good karma toward the start and misfortune toward the end. Section 2 The Laws of Truths and Half-Truths 1. What instituted the term likelihood, or probabilis? (Latin: probabilis trustworthy) Cicero’s head inheritance in the field of irregularity is the term he utilized, probabilis, which is the starting point of the term we utilize today. Yet, it is one piece of the Roman code of law, the Digest, arranged by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, that is the primary archive where likelihood shows up as an ordinary term of workmanship 2. What is the standard for exacerbating probabilities? How to register likelihood that one occasion and another occasion both occurring? As per the right way of aggravating probabilities, not exclusively do two half evidences yield not exactly an entire sureness, however no limited number of halfway verifications will ever signify an assurance in light of the fact that to compound probabilities, you don’tâ add them; you increase. That carries us to our next law, the standard for intensifying probabilities: If two potential occasions, An and B, are autonomous, at that point the likelihood that both An and B will happen is equivalent to the result of their individual probabilities. 3. Is the Roman guideline of half evidences: two half verifications establish an entire confirmation, right? What do two half evidences establish by the standard of aggravating probabilities? 4. Assume an aircraft has 1 seat left on a flight and 2 travelers still can't seem to appear. In the event that there is a 2 of every 3 possibility a traveler who books a seat will show up to guarantee it, what is the likelihood that the carrier should manage a miserable client? What is the likelihood that neither one of the customers will appear? What is the supposition? What is the likelihood that either the two travelers or neither one of the passengers will appear? 5. In DNA testing for lawful preliminary, there is 1 out of 1 billion incidental match and 1 out of 100 laberror coordinate. What is the likelihood that there is both an incidental match and a lab blunder? What is the likelihood that one blunder or the other happened? Which likelihood is increasingly applicable? Section 3 Finding Your Way through a Space of Possibilities 1. What is â€Å"sample space†? 2. What is Cardano’s law of the example space? (P. 62) 3. In the Monty Hall issue, for what reason should the player switch after the host’s intercession? Part 4 Tracking the Pathways to Success 1. The stupendous duke of Tuscany’s issue: what is the likelihood of acquiring 10 when you toss three shakers? Shouldn't something be said about 9? 2. What is Cardano’s law of the example space? 3. What is the use of Pascal’s triangle? 4. For the Yankees-Braves World Series model, for the staying 5 games, what is the likelihood that the Yankees dominate 2 matches? 1 game? 5. What is scientific desire? 6. Clarify why a state lottery is equal to: Of each one of the individuals who pay the dollar or two to enter, most will get nothing, one individual will get a fortune, and one individual will be killed in a rough way? Section 5 The Dueling Laws of Large and Small Numbers? 1. What is Benford’s law? Talk about certain applications in business. 2. Clarify the distinction between the recurrence translation and the emotional understanding of haphazardness. 3. Do mystics exist? 4. What is resilience of mistake, resistance of vulnerability, factual hugeness? 5. Portray a few applications from the book of the law of enormous numbers and the law of little numbers. Part 6 Bayes’s Theory 1. Two-little girl issue In a family with two youngsters, what are the odds that the two kids are young ladies? Ans: 25% In a family with two youngsters, what are the odds, on the off chance that one of the kids is a young lady, that the two kids are young ladies? Ans 33% In a family with two kids, what are the odds, in the event that one of the youngsters is a young lady named Florida, that the two kids are young ladies? Ans: half 2. How to apply Bayes’s Theory to decide vehicle protection rates? Ans : Models utilized to decide vehicle protection rates incorporate a numerical capacity depicting, per unit of driving time, your own likelihood of having zero, one, or more mishaps. Consider, for our motivations, a streamlined model that places everybody in one of two classes: high hazard, which incorporates drivers who normal at any rate one mishap every year, and okay, which incorporates drivers who normal short of what one. On the off chance that, when you apply for protection, you have a driving record that stretches back twenty years without a mishap or one that returns twenty years with thirty-seven mishaps, the insurance agency can be almost certain which class to put you in. However, on the off chance that you are another driver, would it be advisable for you to be delegated generally safe (a child who complies with as far as possible and volunteers to be the assigned driver) or high hazard (a child who races down Main Street drinking from a half-vacant $2 container of Boone’s Farm apple wine)? Since the organization has no information on youâ€no thought of the â€Å"position of the first ball†Ã¢â‚¬it may allocate you an equivalent priorâ probability of being in either gathering, or it may utilize what it thinks about everybody of new drivers and start you off by speculating that the odds you are a high hazard are, state, 1 out of 3. All things considered the organization would demonstrate you as a hybridâ€one-third high hazard and 66% low riskâ€and charge you 33% the value it charges high-chance drivers in addition to 66% the value it charges okay drivers. At that point, following a time of observationâ€that is, following one of Bayes’s second balls has been thrownâ€the organization can utilize the new datum to reexamine its model, modify the 33% and two-third extents it recently doled out, and recalculate what it should charge. In the event that you have had no mishaps, the extent of generally safe and low cost it relegates you will increment; on the off chance that you have had two mishaps, it will diminish. The exact size of the modification is given by Bayes’s hypothesis. In a similar way the insurance agency can intermittently modify its evaluations in later years to mirror the way that you were without mishap or that you twice had a mishap while driving the incorrect path down a single direction road, holding a wireless with your left hand and a donut with your right. That is the reason insurance agencies can give out â€Å"good driver† limits: the nonappearance of mishaps raises the back likelihood that a driver has a place in a generally safe gathering. 3. Likelihood of right finding Assume in 1989, measurements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention appear around 1 of every 10,000 hetero non-IV-tranquilize mishandling white male Americans who got tried were tainted with HIV. Additionally assume around 1 individual out of each 10,000 will test positive because of the nearness of the disease. Assume 1 out of 1,000 will test positive regardless of whether not contaminated with HIV (bogus positive). What is the likelihood that a patient who tried positive is in truth sound? Ans: So in the event that you test 10 000 individuals you will have 11 positives †1 who is truly contaminated, 10 are bogus positives. Of the 11 positive guinea pigs, just 1 has HIV, that is, 1/11. In this manner the likelihood that a positive guinea pig is solid = 10/11 = 90.9% 4. O. J. Simpson preliminary As indicated by FBI measurements, 4 million ladies are battered every year by spouses and sweethearts in U.S. what's more, in 1992 1,432 or 1 out of 2500 were executed by their spouses or beaus. The likelihood that a man who hitters his significant other will proceed to slaughter her is 1 of every 2500. The likelihood that a battered spouse who was killed was killed by her abuser is 90%. Which likelihood is applicable to the O. J. preliminary? What is the central contrast among likelihood and measurements? Ans: 1) Relevant one is the likelihood that a battered spouse who was killed was killed by her abuser = 90%. 2)the key distinction among likelihood and measurements: the previous concerns expectations dependent on fixed probabilities; the last concerns the surmising of those probabilities dependent on watched information. Part 7 Measurement and the Law of Errors 1. Political decision For what reason did the creator contend that â€Å"when decisions come out very close, maybe we should acknowledge them with no guarantees, or flip a coin, instead of leading describe after recount?† Ans: (pg= 127 and 128) Elections, similar to all estimations, are loose, as are the relates, so when races come out incredibly close, maybe we should acknowledge them with no guarantees, or flip a coin, as opposed to directing a great many relates. 2. What is scientific insights? Ans: Mathematical measurements, gives a lot of devices to the translation of the information that emerge from perception and experimentation. Analysts some of the time see the development of current science as rotating around that advancement, the production of a hypothesis of estimation. In any case, measurements additionally gives apparatuses to address certifiable issues, for example, the adequacy of medications or the notoriety of government officials, so a legitimate comprehension of factual reaso

Genetically Modified Foods

Genetically Modified Foods Genetically Modified Foods and Medicines Home›Science Posts›Genetically Modified Foods and Medicines Science PostsGenetic modification is the alteration of the genetic setup of a living organism so as to bring a specific feature to the organism. It involves the alteration of the genetic material of an organism, scientifically known as deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA). The alteration of genetics is in a way so as to bring about a specific characteristic of the organism which could not have occurred naturally via reproduction or recombination. According to (Biology Online, 13), the modification is made on a specific chromosome which bears the characteristic that is to be modified. Genetic modification is a developing science which is producing more amazing organisms each day. The intentions of genetic modification are just. It is intended to make human life better by providing organism which best fit his needs. However numerous facts have been put forward agai nst genetically modified organisms GMOs. The effects of GMOs are many and have even been proven to be harmful to health. The following paper will take an in-depth insight into genetically modified foods and medicines ant try to present the present situation. The process of altering the genetic setup of an organism is very involving. It involves a thorough research in and out of the laboratory. The scientists and researchers identify a trait that they want in an organism. After identifying the trait, they study the genetic setup of the organism. This is done in order to identify the manner in which the gene behaves and possible ways in which it can be altered. The scientist then alters the genetic makeup of the organism then looks if he was successful or not. This is done by subjecting the organism to conditions in which the organism is expected to undergo. Tests are made on the organism to try to show if it is convenient for human consumption. According to the science museum (10), th e techniques used in genetic modification are as follows. First there is the transfer of genes from one organism to another (10). This is followed by ‘moving, deleting, modifying, or multiplication of genes which are in an already living organism’ (10). The final step is the ‘modification of existing genes or constructing new ones and incorporating them into a new organism’ (10). The main aim of genetic modification is to produce organisms which can be used for efficient food production, organisms which can be able to withstand adverse climatic conditions such as drought and cold and still be productive.Various genes have been transferred into to other organisms so as to produce genetically modified ones.   According to (Whitman 1), the use of barius thuringiensis, BT genes in corn in other plants Bts is one of the widely used gene transfers. BT is a bacterium which occurs naturally and produces crystal proteins that are resistant and poisonous to insect larvae. The bacteriu m has been transferred to corn so as to enable it to produce naturally occurring pesticides which are effective against insects such as the European corn borer. Another gene that has been transferred is the chloroplast genes which have been transferred to the nuclear plant genome. The transfer has adjusted nuclear base composition and codon usage. Other plants which have been modified are corn, cotton ,potato and tomato which have engineered for insect resistance, corn, soybean, cotton, canola sugar beet, rice and flax have been engineered for herbicide tolerance,   papaya, squash and potato have been engineered for virus resistance. Canola and soybean have been engineered for altered oil composition and tomato for delayed ripening. Chicory and corn engineered for male sterility and restorer system which facilitates plant breeding, (Transgenic crops 3).   GMOs taste almost like naturally bred foods but they have unusual characteristics for example biggness, colouring and less time o f maturity. The pros to genetic modification are numerous.   (Whitman 1) argues that genetically modified organisms are pest resistant. Losses which have been brought about by pests are astonishing. This has adverse effects on the farmers who in turn shun away from agriculture due the fear of losses brought about by pests. Pests also do cause food shortages in the world. Pest infestation has been seen to cause previous food shortages in the world. Finding food plants which are able to resist pests is a major breakthrough in the world today.  In addition to that, pest control vial genetic modification produces disease and pest free produce hence providing the consumers with good and healthy food. Genetic modification has made it easy for herbicide control. It is uneconomical and time consuming to mechanically weed farms. For this reasons, farmers tend to spray their farms with herbicides which can be harmful to the plant crops. Producing modified plants which can be able to withstand the herbicides is a great step towards herb control.Nutrition is another key area that genetic modification has been able to make a positive impact. Malnutrition which is common in many third world countries has been curbed by GMOs.   Producing crops which have more vitamins and      nutritional values as compared to the naturally occurring organisms has been a major breakthrough in dealing with malnutrition. For instance, golden rice which is known to have an unusually high content of beta carotene has been very successful dealing with malnutrition due to its high nutritional value. The rice was developed by researchers in Swiss Federal Institute of Technology for plant sciences. Genetic modification has made a positive impact on the pharmaceutical field. Human vaccines and drugs have been made through genetic modification of organisms. Measles vaccine, insulin and penicillin are great examples to genetic modification in medicine. Genetic modification has also created food securi ty in the world. More agricultural produce is now achievable which has led to an increase in food supplies in the world. Cases of drought and famine can now be dealt with in a more realistic manner since the world has food reserves which can sustain its people unlike in previous years before the introduction of genetic modification. However, genetic modification of food has provided some unforeseen dangers and disadvantages. GMOs are known to cause allergies to certain factors. Proper testing of the foods has not been done before they are released to the market for mass production.   Caution must be taken by the researchers so as they are able to produce healthy foods which are risk free. There is more health concern in GMOs. According to (Whitman 2), recent studies have shown that genetically modified potatoes have bad effects to the digestive system of rats which had been put under test. This is just one of the many surprising outcomes which have not proved to be good to the ear. C ases of human diseases which are caused by continued consumption of genetically modified foods     have posed a big question to the effectiveness of GMOs as an alternative food production means. The concerns have been great and numerous campaigns have been conducted against genetically modified foods. People are being encouraged to consume traditional foods which are nutritious in nature. Some countries have legislations which compel food manufacturers and producers to label genetically modified foods. This is with an aim of providing prior warning to the consumers before they buy food. Labeling the foods makes the consumer to be able to differentiate naturally produced food from genetically modified foods.Genetically modified foods also produce unintended harm organisms. Modification of genes in an organism may make it harmful for the survival of other organisms. For example the pollen which it produced by causes escalated mortality rates to the monarch caterpillars which consume m ilkweed plants. This in turn tips off the biological balance and creates other problems. Genetic modification leads to transfer of genes to non target species. Plants modified for herbicide resistance tend to pass the characteristic to the weeds thus creating herbicide resistant weeds which are proving hard to control. Increased use of chemicals on foods causes pollution to the soil and water. This is bad to the environment and has provided an avenue for the rise of harmful effects on aquatic life.In conclusion, genetic modification has the potential to bring about a big impact on the world. Thorough researching and testing is a must so as to ensure that human and plant health is put into consideration when creating organisms. It is a tool that can be used to curb food shortages and increase profits for farmers. However, proper care and consideration must be taken in coming up of the modified organisms. The government must come with measure to regulate the research and regulate the introduction of genetically modified organisms into the public. This will ensure that the people who are practicing genetic engineering are qualified and meet the required criteria. Researchers must test the organisms to ensure that any unforeseen effects are dealt with early at the laboratory level rather than at the market level. Altogether, drug and food production is vital for human beings and their production is a must. Genetic engineering is by now the best way to massively and effectively produce them. All that is needed is proper research and always bear in mind that human life comes first.

Use of the Sun and the Moon in Rime of the Ancient...

Both Sun and Moon play significant roles in this old poem, in a symbolic and supernatural way, in order to reinforce the mood that Samuel Taylor Coleridge has attempted to create in his use of old legends and superstitions. The role that the sun and moon play in this tale of cursed sailors is an old one, retold over and over the years that Coleridge adapted for his own. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Although mentioned several times before, the Sun makes its first significant appearance in the seventh stanza of the second part. Before then, one will find both Sun and Moon mentioned many times purely for the reader’s enrichment. The repeated mention leads the reader to believe that it will soon become important by foreshadowing without†¦show more content†¦It eventually turns out that those bars of prison are the shadows of Death’s dead and dying ship, but does this not allude to the approaching change in life that the Ancient Mariner suffers? He becomes trapped in life, to wander the earth forever, spreading his story--a prison of freedom, a cell made out of eternal life. A curse disguised as the world’s greatest blessing. He goes further to describe the boat when he says the line, â€Å"Are those her ribs through which the Sun/ Did peer, as through a grate?† This is, on one level, merely continuing the same vein of in terpretation as mentioned before, both veins. But on another level, it describes the weariness of the Ancient Mariner, and the old and eaten-away shape his body has taken on over the years--his ribs sharp and bony against even the baggy of rags. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;Later, it discusses a very old superstition that many may not be familiar with--the legend of the Moon as guardian of the dead, and keeper of the souls that have passed on. More than once, it is alluded to that the Moon is keeping the sailors’ souls safe, and that the Moon is holding them captive where they lie, as well. Once it even mentions that the Ancient Mariner sees the cold and pale unfeeling light of the moon reflected in the dead men’s cold black unfeeling eyes. Internships Do More Harm Than Good - 965 Words

Internships do more harm than good What is an internship? An internship is a work-related learning experience for individuals who wish to develop hands on work experience in a certain occupational field. Most internships are temporary assignments that last approximately three months or up to a year. After reading the essayâ€Å" Take This Internship and Shove it â€Å" by Kamenetz Anya who graduated from Yale University, I agree with her that internships do more harm than good because of the opportunity cost, over- identify and impact on the economy, not teach the intern the skill they need for the future professional life. Unpaid internships will cause an opportunity cost. The opportunity cost of work as an internship is you for go the income that you suppose to make by working at another job to pay for your rent or pay for your student loan. In the essay Kamenetz mention that interns risk opportunity cost. Time spent at an unpaid internship means that students are not earning money to support themselves or pay of f their student loans. Some internships even cost money, so students may incur further debt (585). You will also be losing benefits such as vacation, wages, and health benefits. Some internships require you to work full time. Instead of staying at home and taking care of your child, you have to go work for others for free. I think Black Like Me is a huge example of how hard work leads to success. After Griffin published this book there was a lot of backlash, but I do believe a lot of good has come from it. I think it has changed a lot of people perception on African Americans in the 1960’s. And I would say that this book was a success for Griffin. At one point in the book Griffin says, â€Å"When all the talk, all the propaganda has been cut away, the criterion is nothing but the color of skin. My experience proved that. They judged me by no quality. My skin was dark† (page 115). I think this just goes to show how much times have changed. Back then black people didn’t even think it was possible to become leaders or even achieve their dreams just because they were judged by the color of their skin. I am not saying that today it is completely easy for black people to achieve their dreams because I do think they still deal with challenges and discrimination, but it is nothing like it was back then. Eventually Griffin had had enough, all the challenges and emotions built up. â€Å"Suddenly I had had enough. Suddenly I could stomach no more of this degradation- not of myself but of all men who were black like me† (page 132). Griffin faced many challenges in this book. But he never gave up. Hard work leads to success. No one in today’s world became successful by just sitting around. If there’s something you want to achieve you have to go after it, even if you know from the beginning that you’re going to face strenuous challenges. In Black Like Me (Griffin 1960) there was an instance that disputed my belief of the Protestant Work Ethic. When John Howard Griffin stops to study a restaurant menu he realizes that just a few days ago he could have ordered anything he wanted but now he does not have that privilege. He then says â€Å"The Negro often dreams of things separated from him only by a door, knowing that he is forever cut off from experiencing them. † I disagree with the quote. It may have been that way back then, but now I think everyone has the equal opportunity to achieve anything to which they set their mind to. The book Black Like Me just goes to show that if there is something you are inspired about or have a dream that it is achievable. There may be challenges and obstacles that you come across but with hard work and dedication you will succeed. Work Reference Rosenthal, Lisa, (2011). Carlson, Patricia Ann’s â€Å"Setting and Fictional Dynamics† article discuses symbolic connotation of the village and forest settings which influences Goodman Brown’s view of good and evil. T he author presents the scenic elements of the forest and the village without ambiguity. Carlson explains the innocence of village life. Also, she resonates on how an external influence can completely alter faith and perception. The article presents the climax of the plot in emotive context. The author resonates on the contradictory extremes of misguided attitude and false perception in the belief of ‘a blackness power.’ Besides, Carlson clarifies on Brand and Brown’s perception of super natural power. The conclusion of this article provides a summary of Brown’s frustration and eventual death. This article will add value to my research paper on the component of symbolism especially when discussing forest and the village. Besides, the author has simplified the understanding of factors which positively or negatively influence faith and perception. This article is developed from an array of deductive arguments from which Carlson creates her views. These argume nts are relevant to my research topic on the qualitative component. Conclusively, the article presents a strong climax on the plot of the story. Hostetler, Norman H. â€Å"Narrative Structure and Theme in ‘Young Goodman Brown’.† The Journal of Narrative Technique 12.3 (Fall 1982): 221-228. Rpt. in Short Story Criticism. Ed. Anna J. Sheets. His proactive analysis of conflict is relevant to my research topic. The author proves that imaginations can be self-destructing especially when not balanced with reasoning. The conclusion of the article is drawn from a range of dependent and independent premises. These premises are relevant to the topic of my research. Hurley J. Paul. â€Å"Young Goodman Brown’s ‘Heart of Darkness.’† American Literature. Southern Illinois University: Illinois, 2003. EBSCO Publishing. Web. Hurley J. The author explains Arguments of different critics and confesses of a diabolical inspiration. Besides, Hurley justifies limits of fiction in arguments and hallucinations. In conclusion, the author opines that self justification and ego-induced fantasy is a disease of the mind. This article presents strong arguments on the negative impacts of self-justification. Hurley suggests that imperative and factious arguments only results in confusion. Subsequently, confusion facilitates ego-induced fantasy. In the end, an individual becomes the victim of his/her beliefs. In my research paper, this article will be the basis of thesis statement. Since the article consists of well researched sources from which the author builds discrete arguments, I will adopt it. This approach is easily testable for fallacies and restrictive notions. Besides, the article incorporates views that are relevant to the research topic. The author explores views of Puritan theorists concerning sin and descent. Johnson reviews Goodman Brown‘s descent and visions. Interestingly, the author concludes that Good Brown’s visions and views on Puritanism is regenerative, negative, and of unjustified fake descent. The author deliberates on separating and defining reality and dream. Though Newton Arvin views Goodman’s vision as true, Jo hnson seems to think otherwise. According to the doctrines of the puritans, God gave man another chance after breaking the first Covenant. Despite the hard labor and sweat, the covenant of hope and faith swells above man’s inequities. However, the author asserts that Goodman’s vision misinterpreted justification to favor many of the misled followers who are not keen on self-scrutiny. Johnson’s views are practical as far as personal beliefs are concern. The essay concentrates on establishing the reality as part of self examination. In the research topic, the concept of self discovery is essential in predicting and interpreting behavior of an individual or a group. Thus, this resource will form part of the literature review. The author has applied qualitative research when analyzing arguments and refers to different schools of thought before a conclusion. Narrated in prose form, the author presents an accurate picture of the Puritan society. Besides, the article explores on the interesting traits of the main characters. Korb’s writing assumes a universal allegory as part of the analysis. The author explores the rich culture, essence of faith, and beliefs in godliness. Young Goodman Brown Looking at the history of mankind, it is possible to see one of the attributes which always supports it. It is faith. No matter what century is considered, either before or after Christ’s birth, people always believed in something.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Young Goodman Brown specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story which dwells upon Puritanism, human beliefs and faith. The weakness of the society depends on the faith of those who live there and if one loses faith and believes that others have made the same, it leads to unsupported suspicions of evil nature of people who live nearby. Brown believes that al people around him have deep faith in good. This is the main basis of his faith. This idea can be considered from the name of his wife, Faith. He lives with her, so believes her, trusts in her power. Faith (wife) is the first symbol in the stor y. She seems to persuade her husband not to go outside, but he does not agree and leaves. Isn’t it the symbol of refusal of faith in goodness? When Brown goes to the forest, he does not pay attention to the fact that he goes to devil, he sees his neighbors and understands that they have lost their faith. This is the beginning of his disbelief and loss of faith in goodness as well. His belief is based on the beliefs of others, as it has been mentioned. When he saw that those beliefs had been ruined, his faith was ruined as well. The whole story is full of allegories which consideration helps get the main idea of the story better. Village is a symbol of something good, while the forest, opposing to it, is an allegory of evil. The dark night is the association with the devil, as evil affairs are made when no one is able to see, at night (Neary 248). The symbolic nature of faith is the problem which can be discussed perpetually as there is no specific answer to the issue. â€Å" The timelessness of mankind’s sin is revealed within the Puritans† (Jacobs n.p.), it can be stated that the allegorical relation of evil’s past, present and future is related to the Fall of Man. The time in the story plays crucial role as it can be considered from different angles and can be referred to the various symbols. If to consider the story deeper, it comes out that the story is related to the time of Salem witch trials that makes it eerier (Jacobs n.p.).Advertising Looking for research paper on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Reading the story, it comes to mind that a journey to the forest may be a symbol of a journey into self. Waking up the next morning, Brown could not understand whether it was a dream or everything happened in the reality. Trying to consider the whole story from this angle, it becomes understandable that dark forest is not just evil, it is a symbol of bed i deas which come to human mind when there is no faith in heart. The answer to the question about why Brown came so long was simple, â€Å"Faith kept me back a while† (Hawthorne 10). Is the wife meant? No! Brown tries to explain why his ideas have not been occupied by dark evil thought. The answer was faith. It is faith that makes people remain good and trust others. Nevertheless, having entered the forest, Brown was not sure whether he was going the right way, whether it was exactly what he wanted. But, the understanding that other people in the village (the symbol of goodness) were on the side of dark (as he thought), he became to assure in his choice. The weakness of the morality in society takes place when people stop perceive faith, when they are unable to consider what they believe into and copy the beliefs of the society. This is the main factor which points to the weakening of the society in general. The author of the book tries to find roots of such behavior in Puritan ism, a religion which creates corruptibility of private religious faith (Campbell n.p). Donoghue in his article tries to point to the fact that the absence of faith is not considered as sin in the story, still, Brown hides real reasons for going to the forest. Why does he do it? If it is not a sin, he could tell about it his wife. This is the matter. Walking inside self and searching for dark corners, a person cannot think adequately, and right when faith is absent, dark thoughts occupy human mind. If a person has come to the ‘forest’ (evil place is meant), there no other ways out. The same has happened with Brown. The time when he entered the forest was the beginning of the faith loss. Devil had already gained the aim, there was just necessary to strengthen the idea that all people were the same. The symbolic meeting with the village representatives is the play of Brown’s mind. Moreover, the whole journey may be considered as the mind game as in the morning the main character is unable to understand whether it was in reality or it was a dream. But, his opinion is influenced and the doubts have already occupied his mind.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on Young Goodman Brown specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In conclusion, the main character has to live his life without faith in humanity and in good. Is not it a paradox? Living with Faith Brown does not have it. The story is a good example of the life of a person who believes in nothing, an unhappy man. Brown is tempted by devil, but tries to convince the whole society in this affair. Having been influenced by a devil Brown thinks that all people in the village are also under devil’s impact and cannot trust them as they are evil. Brown’s faith in goodness stops existing when he is sure that all people are tempted by evil. The morale of the story is that human faith is lost when they see that others in the society have already lost their faith in goodness. How to Write a Political Science Research Paper

How to Write a Political Science Research Paper A good Political science research paper is one that conveys the findings of the research in a way that can conveniently and very easily be understood by the reader or the targeted audience. Many things go into writing a good research paper and one such important issue is organization. Without organization, a reader is likely to get confused about the contents of the paper, and this means that it will be next to impossible to write a good research paper if organization of the research paper is not taken seriously. If one does not document the results of the research in an organized way, it also means that the findings of the research will be as good as lost to everyone except the individual that carried out the research. A typical political research paper should be organized right from the abstract and introduction paragraphs to the conclusion and bibliography pages, respectively. The introduction of the essay should be organized in a way to enable a reader to quickly take note of the purpose of the research and the main issues being explored in the research paper. The body of the paper should be organized in a way to provide a good background, some of the main facts being discussed, a literature review section, a methodology section, a results section, and a discussion of the results section. The conclusion of the research paper should also be organized so it describes the issues determined in the essay and this is why recapping the main issues explored in the research paper is important. Apart from organization, the other thing very important to essay writing is the style of writing. In most cases, the instructor or examiner of the research paper makes a point of letting the writer know the style to be used in writing the paper. However, if no style is indicated, it is always recommended that one uses the American Psychological Association (APA) style. As one writes the research paper using this style, one should always strive to write a well-organized paper that clearly presents the facts, theories discussed, and the analysis of the findings. Also, the sentences should be clear and contain words that can very easily be understood. This does not mean that one should completely avoid the use of certain vocabularies; rather; one should limit the use of vocabularies and onl y make use of the necessary terminologies. If one uses too many vocabularies, the reader may not easily understand the contents of the Political Science research paper and this will defeat the paper’s main purpose.

Star Wars in Spanish

Star Wars in Spanish If you want to talk with your Spanish-speaking friends about Star Wars, the Fundacà ³n del Espaà ±ol Urgente has some advice for you. Known in English as the Foundation for Urgent Spanish, the Royal Spanish Academy-affiliated organization also called Fundà ©u BBVA has issued guidelines to aid Spanish speakers and publications in discussing the space saga. Among them are that the film series should not be referred to by its English name - as is common - but by the Spanish name for the first film in the series: La guerra de las galaxias (literally The War of the Galaxies). As is the case with other compositition titles, only the first word should be capitalized. As with that piece of advice, Fundà ©us other recommendations show some similarities and differences with English: Precuela is an acceptable word to refer to a prequel, just as secuela is acceptable for a sequel.Although in English we can talk about Episode 5, in Spanish its episodio V.Theres no need to capitalize the names of groups of creatures, just as names of ethnic groups arent capitalized. Thus the Ewoks are known as los ewoks. (In words of recent foreign origin, it is common to pluralize by appending -s rather than -es as is usually done with words ending in a consonant.)Jedis are known as jedis, but the Jedi Order can be written with capitalization as la Orden Jedi.Names of spaceships are capitalized much as they are in English. Thus the Millennial Falcon is el Halcà ³n Milenario.A laser is un lser.A hard-core fan can be called un or una friki, whose spelling is preferred to friqui.A series of nine films can be called either una nonalogà a or una enealogà a. Im not sure what the English equivalent is, but this is similar to the way a series of three films is called a trilogà a in Spanish (trilogy in English). The entire saga can be referred to as, well, una saga even though the traditional meaning of saga refers to legends less grand. The use of franquicia (franchise) should be avoided in referring to the movies series itself - its better to use serie. Franquicia should be used to refer to merchandise and spinoffs (such as comic books) based on the movie series.Luke Skywalker? Hes  Lucas Caminante de los Cielos, a calque. And Han Solo is simply Han Solo.  Native speakers have often written the name as Han Sà ³lo, but Fundà ©u says the accent isnt needed.

Implication of National Innovation System Essay

Implication of National Innovation System - Essay Example l the levels among the individuals and organizations and the governments usually have a major influence on the innovations via the finances that they avail and the developments of institutions of further learning that will impart the knowledge on the people. The governments then require an outline that covers the concepts and an experimental basis that will gauge if and how their contribution of the public policy to the total innovation of the nation could be made better than it is (Hertog,  P., Remà ¸e,  S., & Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2001, p. 4). China has made advancements in a lot of things and competes with the US in a number of sectors and also in the military innovations in that they have developed new ways in which their military personnel will get ready and fight in a war so that they win it in a way that is modern. They have also made strides in the development of hardware and software technology for their organizations and also for the individual consumer in a world of innovation that can either be slow or fast and these innovations can happen at the same time or in a specified sequence (Cheung, 2013, p.188). China’s government made a histrionic move in its foreign and economic policy in 1978 and this changed the way that people looked at it from the business point of view making it become a profitable destination for multinational establishments that are from other countries outside China and the international business researchers (Kau & Marsh, 1993, p. 124). The Chinese government employed the use of the foreign direct investment in the 90’s with the intention of stimulating the rate of economic development and the achievement in the attracting the foreign business to start there is in contrast to the their own state owned enterprises that are in debt (Chen,  2011, p. 145). Even though all this that is going on is good for the investors, the unique characteristics of these environment and the implications that will

Why Might The Rapid Expansion Of Trade And Foreign Direct Investment Essay

Why Might The Rapid Expansion Of Trade And Foreign Direct Investment In The Asia Pacific Be The Main Driver Of Economic Change In The Asia Pacific - Essay Example FDI-induced trade is an important component of international business of the multinational companies. Kawai and Urata (2002) states that at the time of pre-crisis ‘miracle’ period, the percentage share foreign trade in the (GDP) gross domestic product was significantly higher for upcoming market economies in Asia Pacific than for other emerging economies in other parts of the globe. Generally, new developments have been experienced in the international economic activities of the Asia Pacific economies since 1980s. For example, between 1980 and 1977, the share of East Asia’s foreign trade in GDP increased at significantly greater rates. Currently, the region is more economically integrated with other parts of the world than with itself. Since FDI and trade are more of complementary to each other than substitutes, large inflows of FDI to Asia Pacific have increased the region’s participation in international trade. A combination of FDI and international trade has therefore become the main driver of economic change in the Asia Pacific. The rise in the levels of FDI in Asia Pacific can be attributed improved regional and global economic environment. For example, emergence of global markets and globally integrated production, accelerated technological change and existence of investment treaties between Asia Pacific and other countries. There are other reasons why the rapid expansion of trade and FDI in the Asia Pacific might be the main driver of economic change in the Asia Pacific. First, there has been reduced lending from commercial banks due to debt crisis. This has caused economies of the Asia Pacific to reform their investment policies so as to attract foreign capital. The economic changes can therefore be linked to economic benefits gained from FDI as an attractive alternative to loans from commercial bank. Moran (1998) observes that FDI is the most stable and strong source of external finance for countries that are developing in th e Pacific and Asian regions. In agreement with this, Rajan (2005) states that FDI is a source of supplementary capital that is productive. This therefore denotes that it is a scarce source of capital in terms of deep structural changes of an economy. Rajan (2004) and Nunnenkamp (2004) point out that FDI is an advanced form of international cooperation. It is therefore one of the most effective ways of integration and transforming a local/national economy into a global one. One of the major advantages of FDI is that it helps in facilitating economic development of the country where the investment is done. In other words, the host country. This scenario is mainly applicable for developing economies like that found among countries comprising the Asia Pacific. FDI normally favours an increase in the foreign-trade turnover of the receiving country, lead to diversity of production, technical and scientific collaboration forms, and expansion trade in volume. This is to say that the higher levels of FDI in a country, the higher the chances of that country engaging foreign trade. Such multinational companies will be exporting their produce to other global markets. FDI flows that are induced/stimulated by transnational corporations (TNCs) investing in Asia Pacific have had great economic significance in the region. They have brought in technological know-how, attracted capital flows, created global production networks, and introduced advanced managerial,

Student Council Speech

Good afternoon, My name is ______ and I am running for student council. Dedicated. Responsible. And Enthusiastic. These are three words that describe me, and three reasons why you should vote for me. I cannot promise that if I am elected we will be allowed to have no tests or have no homework. But I can listen to what you, the students have to say, and pass it on to the faculty. I will do my best to meet any student requests. The only promise I can make is that I will do my hardest to help you, the students, have a memorable school yearHere are some examples, we can do to earn more funds as well as activities; Students would have a â€Å"WAC † where they walk and talk (carefully) together and raise money for the school, . Another idea would be to have a â€Å"Green Day† where students and teachers would plant flowers and recycle water bottle caps. â€Å"Our Grade Wall†, where each grade gets a wall to decorate and it shows the artistic and fun side and leave thei r mark for other students to see when they graduate. Also, a â€Å"read for cause month† where all students and teachers read selected books and vote for their favorite book; then, a day set aside for â€Å"Students-vs. -Teachers Sports† activities where students and teachers can vs. each other with any sport. I would like to have â€Å"Movie Night† where we could watch a movie; â€Å"Jersey Day† where we can wear our favorite jersey from any team; and â€Å"Picnic Day† where we can all eat outside and play with our friends.Another Idea would be more fundraisers like bake sales, charity stands and more. Maybe more dress down days; clubs for 6th graders interested in sports and of course fund raisers. But, I can’t promise that everything will come true. King Lear by W. Shakespeare and A Brave New World by A. Huxley Free Essay Example, 1500 words

In King Lear, just after being banished, Cordelia gets a proposal of marriage from the King of France, who says â€Å"Fairest Cordelia, that art most rich, being poor/ most choice, forsaken, and most loved, despised/Thee and thy virtues here I seize upon. /be it lawful I take up what’s cast away. † (I. i. 253-255). The King of France has his own palace and the people of France and is in a better position than the Cornwall or Albany, who marry Regan and Goneril. Cordeila got the better end of the bargain, even though her father threw her out with nothing. In A Brave New World, there is more situational irony. First, even though science and scientific research has brought the society to the point they are now at, science is banned. Mustapha tells John, â€Å"every discovery in pure science is potentially subversive; even science must sometimes be treated an enemy† (Huxley 356). If the society had not had science, they would not have been able to start genetically producing babies. In addition, sex, an act that could cause babies to be born, is regarded as a â€Å"game† (Huxley 48). We will write a custom essay sample on King Lear by W. Shakespeare and A Brave New World by A. It is almost terrible to see the irony in it, because even children as young as seven are considered â€Å"charming† when playing it (Huxley 48). Characters in this story are also examples of situational irony, including Linda. She tells John about the world that she lived in before, and wants to go back, but once she is back, she spends all of her time taking the drug soma (Huxley 239). The doctors give her as much as she wants, even though they know it will kill her, because they only want her out of the way (Huxley 240). In the end, the only thing Linda has seen of the world that she wanted to return to so badly was a bed, where she could take her soma-trips in peace. Also in A Brave New World is Bernard, who finds his world â€Å"very unsatisfactory† (Huxley 244). He also tries to be his own person, in a world that has made everyone the same. He does this mostly b y showing emotions, such as when he cries in front of his friend Helmholtz (Huxley 108). But in the end, when he is sent away to live with people that think like he does on an â€Å"island†, he does not want to go (Huxley 358). These characters and situations, in both stories, are ironic because they are not doing what is expected of them, or the results that have happened are different than expected. Finally, there is verbal irony, or irony with the spoken word, when characters speak words that have an opposite meaning or purpose to what they were meant to say.
